Parish Councillors & Meeting Dates

Bromham
Parish Council

A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish. It is the level of local government which is closest to the community.

Parish councillors do so much more than just attend a parish council meeting once a month. They give their time freely working to:

• Maintain and improve local amenities

• Identify issues which are important to the lives of the residents they represent

• Influence and shape the long-term development policy for the parish, and as part of the planning process, comment on planning applications in the parish

• To bring about improvements through local projects, lobbying other service providers and working in partnership with other parishes and organisations

• Allocate locally the funds raised by the Parish Precept which is paid as part of the compulsory

• Council Tax. (If there was no parish council these funds would be spent by the more remote, and locally disengaged, Wiltshire Council)

Parish councils have the ability to negotiate with, and the power to influence, those other organisations that make the final decisions (such as county council, health authorities, police etc.). In this respect the organisations who make the final decisions know that a parish council gives the best reflection of how a community feels about something and its views will be taken seriously.
